Resnais, Alain

Resnais, Alain
(1922- )
   cinematographer
Born in Vannes, Alain Resnais made his debut with short-subject films of rare aesthetic quality: Van Gogh (1948), Guernica (1950), and the disturbing Nuit et Brouillard (Night and Fog) (1956). But the strength of his scenes and cinematographic rhetoric of his later works will affirm him as the most original creator of the young French school of film of the 1960s: Hiroshima mon amour (1959), L'Année dernière à Marienbad (Last Year at Marienbad) (1961), Muriel, ou le Temps d'un retour (1963), La guerre est finie (1966), Providence (1977), Mon oncle d'Amérique (1978), La vie est un roman (1983), L'Amour à mort (1984), Mélo (1986), Smoking and No Smoking (1993). In these he developed his most fervid meditations on the themes of love, the times, and the great problems that challenge the contemporary conscience.
